What the F32 chassis is

The BMW F32 marked a milestone in BMW naming: for the first time, the two-door coupe was branded as a distinct "4 Series" rather than a 3 Series coupe. Sharing its underpinnings with the F30 sedan, the F32 offered a lower roofline, wider track, and a more overtly sporting stance. Produced from 2014 through 2020, it slotted between everyday practicality and genuine driver appeal, and forms part of the broader BMW lineage you can explore in our BMW DNA overview.

Models and body styles

The F32 designation covers the coupe body style specifically (the convertible wore F33 and the four-door "Gran Coupe" wore F36). Across the US market, twelve F32 variants were sold, spanning rear- and all-wheel-drive layouts plus SULEV emissions versions:

The naming shift from 428i/435i to 430i/440i arrived with the 2016 mid-cycle update, reflecting revised engine outputs rather than displacement changes. Use our VIN decoder to confirm exactly which variant and options a given car carries.

Engines and drivetrains

The four-cylinder cars (428i, then 430i) used BMW's turbocharged 2.0-liter N20, later replaced by the B48 in the 430i. The six-cylinder 435i and 440i used the potent turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, with the B58 powering the 440i and delivering strong, tunable performance. Both eight-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmissions were offered, and xDrive all-wheel drive was available across the range. If you appreciate BMW's straight-six heritage, the F32's engine bay is a direct descendant of earlier coupes like the E63 and E64.

Owning and buying an F32

The F32 is a rewarding used purchase, blending modern turbocharged performance with a relatively simple, well-supported platform. Points worth checking on any candidate:

Well-maintained 440i examples remain the enthusiast favorite thanks to the robust B58, while 428i/430i models offer strong value and efficiency. Across the board, the F32 delivers the balanced, driver-focused character that defines BMW's coupe tradition.
