The BMW M20 is the compact "small six" that powered a generation of driver-focused sedans and coupes from the late 1970s onward.

The BMW M20 is a naturally aspirated, single-overhead-cam inline-six that BMW introduced in the late 1970s as a smaller, lighter alternative to the big-block M30. Debuting around 1977, the M20 slotted neatly between BMW's four-cylinder engines and the flagship six, giving mid-size models genuine six-cylinder smoothness without the bulk or thirst of the larger unit. In its various guises it produced up to roughly 171 hp, and it remains one of the most beloved engines in BMW's classic catalog.

What the M20 Is

The M20 belongs to the M20 family of compact inline-sixes and represents BMW's push toward a more efficient, packageable six. It shares much of its design philosophy with the four-cylinder M10 and was engineered to fit into smaller engine bays where the physically longer M30 would not comfortably go. This made the M20 the natural choice for the more agile end of BMW's lineup during the 1980s.

Which BMWs Used It

The M20 found its home in the cars that made BMW famous with enthusiasts. It powered six-cylinder versions of the E21 and E30 3 Series, as well as mid-range variants of the E12, E28, and E34 5 Series.
