The plastic coolant expansion tank develops hairline cracks from thermal cycling. Less common than predecessor engines but still a known weak point on BMW inline-6 platforms.
Symptoms
Low coolant warning, visible coolant drip under car, sweet smell from engine bay, overheating
Fix / Remedy
Replace expansion tank and inspect all coolant hoses. Pressure test cooling system after replacement.
