High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Failure

The N54 direct injection high-pressure fuel pump is the single most common failure point. The pump cam follower wears prematurely, causing fuel pressure to drop below the 2,000+ PSI needed for direct injection. BMW issued multiple recalls and extended warranties.

Symptoms
Long crank times, hesitation under load, reduced power, fuel smell, check engine light with codes 2FBF/29DC/29CD
Fix / Remedy
Replace HPFP with updated revision. Always replace the cam follower at the same time. OEM pump strongly recommended over aftermarket.
