There has never been another engine quite like it in a production car, and there almost certainly never will be again. When BMW unveiled the E60 M5 in 2004 for the 2005 model year, it did something that no rival — not Mercedes-AMG, not Audi, not Jaguar — had the nerve or the resources to attempt. It took the engineering philosophy of its Formula 1 program, then at the peak of the Williams-BMW partnership, and distilled it into a naturally aspirated V10 mounted in the nose of an executive sedan. The result was a car that could ferry four adults in leather-lined comfort and, at the flick of a steering-wheel button, transform into something that screamed to 8,250 rpm like a competition car.

The S85 5.0-liter V10 remains one of the most remarkable powerplants ever fitted to a road car. Its 507 horsepower was, at the time, a staggering figure for a naturally aspirated engine of that displacement. But the headline number was never the point. The point was the manner of delivery — the way the tachometer needle chased an 8,250-rpm redline with a ferocity and a metallic, high-pitched wail that no turbocharged M car has replicated since. The Machine: E60 Chassis, S85 Engine

The fifth-generation M5 was built on the E60 platform (the sedan; the E61 designation covered the rare Touring wagon variant sold in Europe). Compared with the beloved E39 that preceded it, the E60 was larger, heavier, and considerably more technologically dense — a reflection of BMW's broader push toward electronic sophistication in the mid-2000s.

The S85 V10: Formula 1 for the Road

The heart of the car was the S85B50, a 4,999 cc naturally aspirated 90-degree V10. Where the road-going M engines before it had evolved from series powerplants, the S85 was a clean-sheet M Division design informed directly by F1 thinking. It featured individual throttle bodies — ten of them, one per cylinder — a bedplate crankcase for rigidity, and an ionic-current knock-control system borrowed from motorsport practice.

The engine breathed through a sophisticated intake and revved to an 8,250-rpm redline, producing 507 PS (500 hp SAE) at 7,750 rpm and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque at 6,100 rpm. The SMG III Transmission

Perhaps the most controversial element of the E60 M5 was its gearbox. In most markets the car was sold exclusively with the SMG III — a seven-speed single-clutch automated manual (Sequential Manual Gearbox) with eleven adjustable shift-speed programs. It was, in essence, a robotized manual, and when driven aggressively in its fastest mode it delivered shifts of thrilling violence. In everyday low-speed driving, however, it could feel jerky and hesitant — a trait that has colored the car's reputation ever since.

North America received something Europe did not: a genuine six-speed manual transmission, introduced for the 2007 model year at the specific request of the American market. Cultural and Motorsport Impact

The E60 M5 landed with a thunderclap. Here was a four-door executive sedan with a Formula 1–derived V10 that could out-accelerate contemporary sports cars while carrying a family and their luggage. The automotive press was divided but fascinated: critics adored the engine and questioned the gearbox and weight, while enthusiasts fell hard for the sheer audacity of the concept.

The V10's cultural resonance was amplified by the fact that BMW was simultaneously fielding V10 engines in Formula 1. The marketing narrative practically wrote itself, and BMW leaned into it — the M5 was explicitly presented as bringing Grand Prix technology to the road. That connection gave the car a mythic quality that persists to this day. No other production sedan has ever offered a naturally aspirated V10 with such an overt racing pedigree.

The engine architecture spread beyond the M5. The E63/E64 M6 shared the S85 V10, giving the coupe and convertible the same spine-tingling top end. Together, these cars defined an entire era of M Division — the high-revving, naturally aspirated, throttle-bodied golden age that ended when BMW pivoted to forced induction with the twin-turbo S63 in the F10 M5 of 2011.

The End of an Era

In hindsight, the E60 M5 represents a high-water mark for a particular philosophy. Emissions regulations, fuel-economy targets, and the relentless march toward turbocharging meant that a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V10 in a sedan was never going to be economically or environmentally sustainable long-term. When the F10 M5 arrived with its turbocharged V8, it was faster and more usable in every measurable way — yet many enthusiasts mourned the loss of the V10's character. The E60 M5 thus stands as the final flowering of the high-revling, atmospheric M engine in the flagship sedan.

The Legacy: How the V10 M5 Echoes Today

The E60 M5's influence on modern BMW is both direct and philosophical. The concept of a configurable "M" button storing a driver's preferred settings — introduced here — is now standard across the entire M range, from the current G80 M3 and its S58 engine to the latest M5. The idea that an M car can offer multiple distinct personalities, from docile daily driver to razor-edged track weapon, was pioneered in earnest by the E60.

Yet the S85 V10 also stands as something of a monument to a philosophy BMW has since largely abandoned. The M Division's story runs from the homologation purity of the E30 M3 through the naturally aspirated brilliance of the S54-powered Z8 era to the V10 excess of the E60. Today, the same division builds electrified, turbocharged, all-wheel-drive machines, and the brand's future points toward the electric revolution of the Neue Klasse generation.

That trajectory makes the E60 M5 all the more precious. It is a car that could not be built today — not for regulatory reasons, not for cost reasons, not for market reasons. Prospective owners should understand that the S85 is a demanding engine. This is not an engine for the casual owner; it is a masterpiece that demands respect and a properly funded maintenance budget.
